Are you looking for an electronic drum kit for your child? Then you may have come across the Millenium Rookie and the Gear4Music DD200 Junior. These two kits are both suitable for the youngest aspiring drummers from the age of 3.
I tested both kits for playability, build quality and value for money. I also let my 3 year old son play the kits. In this comparison I explain the differences between both kits and you will discover which one is the best choice.
What are the differences?
Both the Millenium Rookie and the Gear4Music DD200 Junior are electronic drum kits specifically designed for children. The main differences are:
- The appearance of the kits. The DD200 has pads with colored edges, the Millenium Rookie has pads with the same color. This is a matter of taste.
- The size of the pads. The DD200 has an 8-inch snare pad and three 6-inch tom pads. The Rookie's pads are all the same size, namely 4 pads of 7 inches.
- The degree of noise disturbance: The toms are equal in terms of how loud they produce, but the cymbals on the DD200 are hard plastic, which makes the tapping of the stick on the cymbal quite loud. The Rookie is quieter in that regard.
- Another difference: The DD200 has many different sounds (38 kits in total), the Millenium Rookie over 12.
The prices of the kits are close together. At the time of writing, the Gear4Music DD200 Junior costs 211 euros, the Millenium Rookie costs 189.
Best choice
When weighing up the pros and cons, we conclude that the Millenium Rookie offers more for a lower price.
The Millenium Rookie is height adjustable, easier to fold, has sufficient sounds and includes a stable rack. The kit is also more attractively priced than the DD200.
We will now explain both kits in more detail.
Millenium Rookie
The Millenium Rookie is an electronic drum kit from the German Millenium, which sells both acoustic and electronic drum kits. The Rookie is the most attractive kit in terms of price and offers the perfect opportunity for children from 3 years old who want to learn to play the drums.
This drum kit is easy to adjust in height, so you can also play it as an adult. This works fine, although after a few minutes you will notice that the kit is really designed for children.
The Millenium Rookie can be set up in no time and is immediately ready to play. The module is super easy to use and very intuitive to operate. Navigating between different kits is easy, as is turning on the metronome. Composing kits yourself is not possible.
Another advantage is that the kit is easy to lift and fold, making it easy to put aside when not in use.

Gear4Music Digital Drums 200 Junior
The Gear4Music Digital Drums 200 Junior is an electronic drum kit for children that looks more like a children's drum kit compared to other kits. The kit is colorful and therefore fits well into the style of a child's room.
This drum kit contains, in contrast to the color, a fairly "mature" module, with no less than 38 different kits. In my opinion, these are a bit much. Moreover, many kits are similar in sound. The high number of kits does not really add anything.
One point of attention is the sound the cymbals make when hit with a stick. With headphones on you can hear the sound of a crash, but with the headphones off the sound is quite loud.
All in all, the Gear4Music DD200 Junior is a good choice, but the loud sound of the cymbals, the many (unnecessary) sounds on the module and the higher price make me less likely to choose this kit.

Conclusion
Both the Millenium Rookie and the Gear4Music DD200 Junior are good first drum kits for children aged 3 and up. However, both kits differ in a number of areas, such as appearance, the number of sounds, and the size of the pads.
If you are looking for a solid kit that offers everything a beginner drummer needs, the Millenium Rookie is more than good.
Do you value a colourful appearance more? Then the Gear4Music DD200 Junior is a suitable choice, but take into account a little more sound production.
