New Roland V-Drums 3 and 5 series: What you need to know

After the release of the Roland TD-713, TD-716 and VAD716 It was expected that Roland would release a full line of new mid-priced electronic drum kits. At the end of 2025, Roland released six kits with two brand-new modules: the Roland V31 and the V51.

Unlike Alesis or Millenium, Roland uses a slightly more complex naming structure for their models, which not only indicates the kit's level, but also the included module, the type of pads, and whether it's a traditional or acoustic-style set.

You might not always see the differences between Roland kits. I understand! That's why I've researched the differences and presented them clearly in this blog post.

Good to know: TD stands for “Trigger Drum”, VAD stands for "V-Drums Acoustic Design." The number indicates the model.

Roland V-Drums 3 series

The Roland V-Drums 3 series essentially replaces Roland e-drum kits that were part of the TD-17 line. These were popular drum kits in the entry-level to mid-range segment. For years, this series was known as the benchmark for affordable and high-quality drum kits. The new 3 series has been further developed and can be seen as a new step in this category.

Roland TD-313

Roland TD-313

The Roland TD-313 is the entry-level model in the series. The kit is compact and simple to say, and therefore suitable if you mainly want to play drums at home. The kit includes a smaller kick pad (KD-10) and a CY-5 hi-hat, which makes the kit feel a bit less "pro," but still very suitable for practicing. All other kits in the series do have a proper hi-hat pedal.

The number cymbals is somewhat limited compared to other kits, but that is reflected in the price. However, the kit does have a full-fledged 12″ snare which is therefore large enough for any type of play.

Roland TD-316

The Roland TD-316 has the same module as the 313, but has, among other things, a bigger hi-hat (VH-10) which provides a more realistic playing feel. The cymbal setup It's also a bit more comprehensive; you'll receive a full set of two crashes and one ride. This kit also includes the improved PD-12P snare drum with three high-end sensors that measure your hits even more accurately.

This kit is suitable for drummers who are looking for a professional electronic drum kit with a real hi-hat pedal, without paying the top price.

Roland VAD316

The Roland VAD316 is similar to the previously mentioned kits, but comes in fully acoustic design. The toms aren't as deep as the VAD516, but still give the premium look. cymbals and toms are larger than the TD-316, which gives realistic playability and the feel of a real acoustic kit.

The kit comes with the V31 module, which is mounted separately on a stand. The drum rack is also missing, making the kit feel much more stable, sturdier, and realistic.

Roland TD-5 series

Roland TD-513

The Roland TD-513 is the entry-level model in Roland's 5-series. This kit features the next-level V51 module, which offers even more possibilities than the V31. The biggest difference is the inputs on the back of the module, which allow you to connect more pads and thus build a larger or more elaborate setup.

The kit also comes with 4 cymbals and a real hi-hat pedal, just like the 516.

Roland TD-516

Roland TD-516

The Roland TD-516 goes one step further and has a full chrome finish 14-inch snare, the PD-14DSX. Also the VH-14D hi-hat is full size (14-inch) and actually has two cymbals that open and close, just like an acoustic kit.

This drum set also has larger toms Compared to cheaper models, this provides greater playing comfort and a more realistic feel.

Roland VAD516

The flagship of the 5 Series, the Roland VAD516, is the most luxurious and high-end kit in the series. This premium kit with acoustic design has larger wooden shells, full-sized toms, and a 20-inch kick drum. The kit features Roland hardware (stands) which ensures more stability.

The VAD516 has the same snare like Roland's top-of-the-line model, the VAD716. The PD-14DSX is virtually indistinguishable from the real thing and comes closer to a real snare than ever before, which also applies to the entire kit.

Conclusion

One thing's for sure: when you choose Roland, you're choosing quality. Roland is a leader in electronic drums and is known for its incredibly stable and durable kits. A Roland kit is truly an investment; you buy it for the long term and have the assurance that it will last.

Roland has taken its mid-range V-Drums series to the next level with the arrival of the TD-313/316, VAD-316, TD-513/516, and VAD-516. For drummers who value quality but don't want to spend thousands of euros, there are now six brand-new models worth considering.
